Ash Skyline Plaza

Reaching the Top

On Monday, everyone looked to the sky as the Ash Skyline Plaza hit another milestone. A topping out ceremony marked the placement of the final steel beam and celebrated a job well done as construction remains on target.

Ash Brokerage CEO Tim Ash shared his gratitude for all involved. “It’s taken a lot of effort to get here, and there’s a lot more to go, but hard work always pays off in the end. I firmly believe that,” he said. “I could not be more thankful or grateful than I am right now.”

During the ceremony, the beam was signed by many project representatives – individuals from Ash Brokerage, the City of Fort Wayne, Weigand Construction, MSKTD and Associates, and Hoch Associates. It was then lifted 140 feet into the air and secured atop what will become the building’s distinguishing three-story atrium on the southeast corner.

Larry Weigand, CEO of Weigand Construction, explained the significance of the beam, which was adorned with a small evergreen tree and American flag. The tree, he said, is based on Scandinavian and Native American tradition that nothing man-made should be at the highest point of the structure – it also symbolizes continued luck and growth. The flag is a symbol of patriotism, the American dream, and gratitude for those who defend our future.

When the beam is signed, the future inhabitants become a part the building, added Weigand, who said to-date, more than 182,000 man-hours have gone into the project. He thanked every tradesman and worker who’s been involved, and also noted their excellent safety record on the site. The project’s recordable incident rate is 2.2, which Weigand said is half the state and national average.

The Ash Brokerage portion of the project, which includes its three-story headquarters, a level of commercial space for lease and street-level retail space, is marked for completion in May 2016. The city-owned parking garage is on target for completion in December of this year.

More than 20 representatives of Ash Brokerage were on site to witness Monday’s ceremony and take a private tour of their future headquarters. “Fort Wayne is going to be enriched by having our people downtown,” Tim Ash said, adding he hopes the project inspires others in the city. “It’s about impacting our community and impacting lives, and that’s what our company is all about.”

Mayor Tom Henry also discussed the project’s significance in downtown Fort Wayne, noting the Ash Skyline Plaza is about making the city “a point of destination” for residents, businesses and tourist alike. “Fort Wayne is worth investing in – it’s worth a second look,” he said.
